What Do You Want And How Bad Do You Want It?
“The proof of your desire is in your pursuit.”
I was introduced to this quote today as one of our players lead a devotional after practice with some members of the team. Needless to say, I was inspired. I would however like to use the quote in the context of leadership. Recently we’ve focused on our equation for success
(Ambition+Passion+Purpose = Hard Work) Time = Success

What do you pursue? Why?
We’ve also explained how expectations can be set for the variables associated with success. But there’s one thing that must be present that cannot be manufactured. Ambition is something we want for ourselves and the energy we put into it. Passion can be developed over time or constructed, but it can also fizzle. Purpose is a culmination of the thing we’re meant to do or be and an innate drive to fulfill that purpose. But, desire is the fuel to the drive. It is the component that all the other variables are predicated on. This key ingredient is DESIRE. In a recent podcast I mentioned the famed sports psychologist Bill Beswick’s recollection of an interview he saw on television. The interviewee was an Olympic swimmer that had just won a gold medal. The interviewer made mention of the swimmer “chasing” the medals. In response, the swimmer corrected the reporter and said, “the medals came to me, because I trained everyday for hours on end and did that for years.”
I’ve reflected on that anecdote as well as the exchange and what the meaning of that statement really is. I think what the Olympian was trying to say is, their desire to succeed drove them to do what others wouldn’t, at times when others wouldn’t, and for durations that others wouldn’t. So that fate had no choice but to hand the medals over to them.
As servant leaders, we must wake up with a desire to help others, see them overcome their obstacles, see them grow & develop, and seek to cultivate a servant’s heart within them.
In this Sunday’s Mindset for the week ahead, I want to address the things necessary to keep desire alive, as well as protect it from mediocrity and complacency. Today, focus on what your purpose is and the desire you have to fulfill it. What is your purpose? On a scale of 1-5 with 1 being “I’m complacent” and 5 being “I’m on fire to fulfill my purpose,” answer this question: How intently and intensely are you exercising your desire to fulfill your purpose lately? Wake up tomorrow and go make a difference.
