The Pieces of Your Vision
“A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.”
– Rosabeth Moss Kanter
In our most recent, but not yet published podcast, we discussed the equation for success and in the Sunday edition of our newsletter we focused on the prerequisite for this equation which is setting the metric. What is success for you? Are you building toward awards or rewards? What is your vision for yourself and the people you lead?

How do you care for the forest? One tree at a time.
For the Tribe Coaches, our metric of success is the development of others into leaders and seeing them live out their leadership across the span of their lives. Once your metric is set, now it’s time to apply the necessary equation for achieving success. Three things make up the sum of the vision you have for success. The addition of these can drive you or the subtraction / lack thereof can derail you (For you math lovers I applied PEMDAS).
(Ambition+Passion+Purpose = M.E. Maximum Effort) x Time = Success
Ambitions are the futures you see for yourself and your people. It’s made up of the daily, weekly, and monthly peaks we climb as well as the peak itself combined with the desire to make these climbs which is fueled by our passion. Passion is the energy that keeps us awake at night and lies within our first thoughts when we wake. Our purpose is the meaning behind our pictures of future selves, ambitions, and the reason for having the passion for what we do. When these things are combined, maximum effort is produced. When they combine over time we see our long term goals come to fruition. A lot of patience is required in playing the long game.
The definition(s) for ambitions needs some more refining though. Simply put, they are your growth goals for yourself and your people and the desire to achieve them over the course of time. Your ambitions are made up of the daily minutiae that equate to long term success. Short term goals are useful, but they become powerful when we align them as pieces of a puzzle leading to our bigger picture. The process we propose is not as simple as saying, “I want to win a state championship, so therefore we’ll win a conference championship as a stepping stone.” Keep in mind your focus is on the rewards from servant leadership, such as building better people and seeing them live that out. For example, if this is my ambition for my players, then I can’t stop pursuing this after completing one community service project. I have to help them see their power to change people’s lives and help instill in them the reasons and desire to do so every single day. That’s putting the puzzle pieces of my vision together. That’s caring for the forest one tree at a time. Planting, caring, cultivating, repeating.

Add pieces to your masterpiece everyday
So, answer a couple of questions about your ambitions. What are some puzzle pieces you want to see manifested this week for the people you lead? What are some you desire to see for yourself? Your team, culture, & organization as a whole? For these to be driven by your purpose and attacked with passion, they must align with your big picture of success. If I declare that my image of success is to see my players become excellent citizens, spouses, teachers, parents, and people, then every conversation, communication, example, & measure of accountability must reflect that. You must speak life into those futures because those individual futures are your ambitions for them. The holistic culmination of those roles is my definition of success. Therefore my processes must follow a pathway that leads to those outcomes.

What meaning does the water-carrier lose if we remove her purpose?
Everyday, as a leader, be intentional with every detail of every conversation whether in person, text, or email. Every action you take must be measured as an example of leadership. Every hug, handshake, or high five needs to convey your belief in that person. When holding someone accountable do so with love and sincere concern as your why. These are the puzzle pieces that will come together for the people you lead that will help them put together the vision you have for them. When joined together these pieces forge your ambitions for them. Every step in the process to your success needs to feed and nurture the ambitions and overall vision you have. This week you can start putting together the puzzle of your vision by:
Setting your metric.
Knowing & establishing your purpose.
Developing your ambitions.
Infusing your passion.
Applying daily with maximum effort, love, and transcending leadership
