What Do You Believe?
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”―Henry Stanley Haskins
I was on my way home from a game this morning and decided to turn the radio on so that I could stay awake. Yeah that’s right…this morning. The grind of the season is upon us. On the radio came a song that captured exactly what I wanted to write about regarding the virtues we need to tap into in order to keep desire for our leadership vision alive and thriving. The most impactful lyrics are as follows:
“If you're goin' through hell keep on going
Don't slow down if you're scared don't show it”
We can find joy in our lives even in difficult seasons. We can have courage to “get back on the line.” We can persevere and continue to fight when troubles seem to be surmounting. But, what does our fight look like? Does it appear to be just a means by which to “get by?” Or are you swinging for the fences. The vital component in your fight, is your SELF BELIEF.
If you’re goin’ through hell the last thing you should do is exude fear. You have to “keep going.” As leaders we cannot hesitate or let up when it comes to demanding from life the excellence we pursue!
Leaders, the people you lead need to see you believing in yourself and them. It has to emanate from every pour. Your belief in who you are, what you stand for, and what you will do must be evident in every word and action.
“Don’t slow down.” If you’re willing to get up after a knock down and get back on the line, then take off at a sprint. The day after a loss, have the best training session of the year. Have you had a proposal rejected? Create one that no one can deny or reject. Have you been passed up for a promotion? Become the asset your organization can’t function without. Is your marriage falling apart? Be the spouse your spouse dreams of. Refuse to wallow. Mediocrity is not acceptable. You’re on the line you might as well run as fast as you can.

Belief is not something that has to be conjured up. It is the trust you have in your values and the integrity you exercise everyday
“If you’re scared don’t show it.” Vulnerability is so very vital to leadership. And for some, showing doubt and fear may be acceptable. But if our vision for the people we lead and for ourselves is rooted in growth and development, then the struggles we face are necessary for our objective. So then, what is there to fear if we see failure as a necessity in our path? Try discussing openly what fears you have and what fears the people you lead have. Not with the purpose of dwelling on them, but in order to expose, expel, and overcome them.
Our team tied last night. It wasn’t the result we wanted and we all, including myself, were left reflecting on how we can be better. The final thought we left our team with was this: The best thing about tomorrow is that it’s not today. Today’s failures are the lessons we GET TO learn from. Tomorrow I GET TO apply them. Tomorrow we GET TO be our best. And, we’ll do so with the highest character we can display.
Live by your values. Growth, development, and integrity ARE the vision. So, if we see failing as the key ingredient in accomplishing that vision, then there is nothing to be afraid of and we as leaders can believe whole-heartedly in our systems & leadership. But most importantly, that the people we lead will be better versions of themselves tomorrow and better equipped to lead as a result of going through whatever version of hell you find yourself traversing.
So keep going. Whatever your “going” looks like. It’s Wednesday and there are 4 more opportunities for growth left in this week. Don’t slow down. Serve and lead with all of your focus and energy. Regardless of the “hell” you’re experiencing, if you’ll attack it, it can’t hold you down forever. If you’ll believe that the tests we face make us better and that they’ll lead you and the people you lead to your vision for them as a person and leader, then exude this belief in every step you take, then you might just get out of hell before the devil even knows you’re there.
Have a blessed rest of your week!
