What Are You Made Of?
"Courage to me is doing something daring, no matter how afraid, insecure, intimidated, alone, unworthy, incapable, ridiculed or whatever other paralyzing emotion you might feel. Courage is taking action….no matter what. So you're afraid? Be afraid. Be scared silly to the point you're trembling and nauseous, but do it anyway!"
― Richelle E. Goodrich
In order to keep desire alive during difficult times, you must possess COURAGE! But, don’t mistake achieving just any old goal or metric as success. I offer you exhibit A: The Cowardly Lion. When Dorothy found the Cowardly Lion along the famed Yellow brick Road, he was jumping out and attacking poor little Toto! Was he pouncing on a meal? Yeah I guess in the most literal sense he was. But can we distinguish his actions as courageous? Achieving mediocrity is not aiming for excellence and missing! It’s trying not to aim for failure and barely getting your dart on the board. If there’s no risk for the reward, then courage wasn’t required.

In the end, he receives a shiny medal
By that same perspective, do we as leaders only pursue the “low-hanging fruit?” This year has already been extremely tough and it’s only April. Thinking of what more the year can bring can be so very overwhelming…if you allow it to be. The news, the bills, the losses, the misfortune, the loss of loved ones, the lack of equity, the way nothing seems to go your way. All of these things can begin to pile up on you both at home & in your professional life. They can cause anxiety, depression, and fear. These things manifest themselves in our minds first by appearing as negative self talk, lack of belief, morale, and physiologically as a lack of energy or as apathy.
They key to overcoming is in your response. The Cowardly Lion ends up with no meal and a tongue lashing from Dorothy and although his is a happy ending, we don’t all have a circle of friends like the tin man & scarecrow or a mystic helper named Oz. For most leaders when you look around for your circle of supporters when things are going bad, you may find yourself in an empty room. I’m so very blessed to be able to say that is not my case at all. But, for many it is. A mantra I learned a long time ago is, “Be your own superhero.” No one is coming to save you, so figure it out on your own. Sometimes leaders end up in that very predicament. No one has the answer to your problems, but the solution is get up and get to work because of that very reason. I present to you exhibit B. Look at that specimen. Does he know failure? Sure he does. But look at those eyes. For whichever gazelle he chases next I sure have pity.

Does this guy look like he needs a medal?
And so it is with us leaders. Are you chasing the easy win due to your insecurity? Or do you have vision for a prize that is currently escaping you due to its complexity and level of difficulty to achieve? If you possess vision it’s still not enough. Vision in a season of failure, or difficulty, or loss, or lack of belief can become paralyzed if you don’t also have the courage to accept that these feelings are real, but then get up and hunt anyway. There is risk and plenty of it. Risk of more failure, more grief, and more loss. But, there is also an equal ratio of chance for achievement and then overwhelmingly more happiness, confidence, and fulfillment.
Get up tomorrow and attack the negative thoughts, the insecurity, and the apathy. Then, go attack the day. Make plans that see you achieving excellence and don’t settle for mediocrity. Have a blessed week leaders and a successful hunt!
