The Tribe Gathering - Sunday Mindset For The Week Ahead

Get On The Line

Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.” - Matthew 28:2-7

As I was playing with my son outside yesterday I realized that for me, Easter is a perfect example of another virtue that leaders must possess in order to keep our DESIRE alive and burning. Regardless of your view on Jesus’ divinity, the man was hunted down and tortured. Yet he continued to preach even to his last breath. When’s the last time that happened to you or me?! Depending on the season of life we’re in we often consider a lofty medical bill to be overwhelming. Perspective is paramount when it comes to what we consider hardships.

We must have optimism and find JOY, we have to have COURAGE to face fears, challenges, and doubts, but sometimes events and hardships compound to overcome us. In these instances we must also demonstrate PERSEVERANCE.

Get up & “get on the line”

Ask yourself this question: What does it take to extinguish my desire?

If you find yourself clinging to mediocrity lately, what caused that? Are the answers to the two questions the same? If not, you may be lacking PERSEVERANCE. Often what we think can knock us down and keep us there is a delusion of grandeur compared to what actually can cause us to want to give in.

In a recent conversation with some coaches regarding mindset of our society I realized that quiet quitting and giving up have been normalized. Terms such as, “I just can’t,” or “I’m so over this,” and “bare minimum Monday,” have become commonplace and dismissed with a laugh as people use them for quitting on tasks, people, and goals.

Then there’s my all-time most hated phrase. It’s used as a derogatory term now and much more common than one might think. The label of being a “try-hard,” is given to someone that has tremendous work ethic at all times and it’s used as an insult.

That’s right, to work hard for your goals and development as a person has become vilified. The truth behind this is that lazy people need a way to camouflage their shame for not working hard. So it’s become easier to insult those that do work hard rather than put in effort.

Are you a victim of this same mindset. Do you ever have this conversation with yourself? “Why should I even try? I’m just going to fail again.” If so, you need to persevere.

YOU have SUPERPOWERS

I want to offer you three mantras that I try to live by when faced with overwhelming circumstances and negative thoughts of my own.

1) No one is coming to save you. Become your own superhero. Learn from your losses and failures. The only kryptonite you have is the list of things you tell yourself you can’t do. Take what you learn about yourself in failure and turn it into a superpower.

2) Regardless of what you're going through, someone else is going through more, worse, or both. So, love greatly and serve often. If you ever find that you can’t accomplish something for yourself that makes you happy or gets you closer to a goal or vision, then try doing something for someone else. Show love, service, and gratitude to another person. It just might be the catalyst & second wind you both need to get up from a knock down. And if it’s not for you, you took a step toward becoming a better person and a servant leader and that’s a goal we should all strive toward.

3) A lesson from my college rugby coach. I literally recalled it the day my daughters’ mother took her life. "Get on the line." - have you failed? Get on the line and go again. Have you lost? Get on the line and go again. Are you hurting? Get on the line. Have the courage and confidence that this time will be different. You'll never know unless you get on the line and go. For me, that “line” was just waking up the next day to raise my 1 year old twins. Then the line moved. Now just change a diaper, make a cup of coffee, put the utilities in my name only, make funeral arrangements, & workout.

The line keeps moving so long as you do too. In a few weeks my line was, move into a new townhouse, go to work, go to practice, go to dinner with friends. And in a few months it was go fishing, go to a concert, & go on a date. But, it all started with JUST GET UP & GET ON THE LINE.

So where do you find yourself today? Today, I am reminded that Jesus carried a massive cross and a more massive burden, yet he persevered. What I’m carrying today as worries, negative mindset, stress, and things I don’t think I can overcome are miniscule and laughable in comparison. So, I will GET ON THE LINE today. For my family and the players I love so dearly, for those people I will get on the line again. For my vision of the life I want for them I will get on the line.

What’s the first line you need to get on? Find it, own it, have the COURAGE to walk up to it. Then, regardless of whether you fall again, take off. You might just find yourself winning again because you dared to start.

Happy Easter!
