The Tribe Gathering-Sunday Mindset For The Week Ahead
What Do You Expect?
“High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation.”
-Charles Kettering
Earlier this week we offered you our equation for success. (Ambition+Passion+Purpose = M.E. Maximum Effort) x Time = Success

Focus on your expectations for these variables of success
For leaders these are things you strive to maximize for yourself and your teams/organizations. We’d like to look at this equation with a zoomed in lens. Let’s put this under the microscope & really focus on the inner workings that keep these cogs & wheels turning. When you look at what guides ambition, passion, purpose, and ensures maximum effort on a pathway to success, what you find are your EXPECTATIONS. Each of those variables has secondary, tertiary, and further cascading levels of variables that affect them. These can be broken down into subcategories and expectations can be set for each of those. Identifying those is vital, but not the most difficult aspect. That recognition belongs to ACCOUNTABILITY to the expectations.
While it’s difficult enough to hold yourself accountable, the real challenge is setting, establishing, communicating, & upholding the expectations associated with each of these variables. As a leader you know what you want the processes to look like, but ensuring that this happens is easier said than done. We’re leading fallible human beings & we are one ourselves! The application of the law of complex systems would be easy to differ to here. So, let’s simplify the issue to one question & it’s subsequent answer(s). What are you willing to you allow?
The answer(s) are evident to those you lead. To dig deeper for reasoning in your answer here are a few more self reflection questions. Do you let some or all get away with bad behaviors? Why? Is the manner in which you hold people accountable equitable? Why or why not? If you find yourself frustrated, but don’t communicate your expectations & the manner in which they’re met with clarity, ensuring comprehension, & defining intent, then WHAT DO YOU EXPECT!
Where the issue of expectations being met becomes problematic is that expectations are set by humans for other humans to meet. But, as technologically advanced as we are, we’ve yet to develop the ability to read minds. The keys are defining, clarifying, rationalizing, and giving purpose to what you expect people to do and accomplish. Leave no doubt.
So how can we refine this process to give our expectations more clarity and also ensure they’re being bought into? Below is a tool we use to refine our expectations, but it can also be used to analyze actions that your people might perform. This target spectrum of comprehension & intent can be used proactively or as a post action analysis to determine level of buy in or the lack thereof.

In order to build more reliable, effective, and efficient expectations you have to build them and communicate them in a manner that forces each stakeholder / team member to be held accountable to them. The expectations themselves must have built in measures of accountability. Coupled with the “target spectrum” above, you can discern for yourself where your team members’ actions fall.
To set more effective expectations, we’d like to propose another equation for you! This one is used to create clear expectations and why you need them. There is clarity in where, who, what action is expected, how it applies to your integrity, when they’ll be executed, and why it’s necessary for everyone on your team or in your organization to meet them.
